Team puts best shoe forward

The softball team is focusing their attention on preparing for the 2019 season as this year did not go well. They were 1-24 on the season with their only win coming from their Sept. 28 game against Lincoln High at 10-2.

The team blames the disappointing season on only having enough players to field a varsity team. Only 17 girls tried out and most found themselves playing on a softball team for the first time.

“Playing on that field with girls who have played their whole life made me feel like I was a fish out of water,” first year player junior Giselle Diaz said.

Veteran players also found the year difficult.

“It’s tough playing with girls that don’t have a lot of experience playing varsity and having to teach them while playing girls that are very experienced,” senior Alexandria Prchal said.

The girls partnered with Funds2orgs, an organization that collects gently used shoes to be sent around the world to help people start small businesses and help promote economic diversity in their communities. They will donate 40 cents per pound of shoes back to the softball program.

The team’s goal is to collect 3,000 pairs by Dec. 7. The money will be used to conduct activities such as team dinners, senior night and team building opportunities.
