CREW gets new time in 2019-20 schedule
Class, lunch times adjusted to accommodate change
April 19, 2019
As students return to school in the fall, they will be faced with more than just a new principal. CREW (Creating Responsible, Educated and Well-Balanced Students) will no longer be at the end of the day but will be after second block each day.
The change will affect not just the order of classes, but the timing of each class as well as lunches.
The bell schedule will be as follows: A1/B2 will run 7:40-9:06 a.m.; A3/B4 will be 9:12-10:38 a.m.; CREW will be 10:44-11:16 a.m.; A5/B6 will be 11:24 a.m.-1:33 p.m. including lunches; and A7/B8 will be 1:39-3:05 p.m.
Each lunch will still be a half hour long but will be later in the day in comparison to the 2018-19 school year. Whereas this year first lunch started at 10:46 a.m., next year it will be 11:24-11:54 a.m.; second lunch will be 11:57 a.m. -12:27 p.m.; third lunch will be 12:30-1 p.m. and fourth lunch will be 1:03-1:33 p.m.
The change came about as a result of a survey conducted of students and faculty members in February which asked for their input on the timing of and use of CREW. The majority of them noted the timing needed to be changed.
“I am confident that this new schedule will provide us with some exciting, new advantages that we will be able to explore as the year progresses,” CREW committee member and English teacher Kathryn McWilliams said.
Junior Andy Santacruz-Garcia feels the change will be beneficial for all students.
“I think it’s a good thing,” he said. “That way we can leave right away after our last class [instead of staying for CREW]. Also, some students need a break, especially in the mornings.”
In addition to allowing students to have a break mid-day, having CREW after second block will pose several benefits for seniors.
Many seniors missed out on opportunities that were held during CREW such as completing college applications, scholarship letters and more with counselors due to having early release.
Changing the time of CREW will help prevent that and will provide students with a time where everyone won’t be worn out and ready to go home.
“Unfortunately, at the end of the day, a lot of seniors have early-out and so the seniors didn’t like it and the counselors didn’t feel like that time was well done,” assistant principal Anne Savery said. “Also, a lot of the feedback that we got was at the end of the day, everybody was just ready to shut down.”
