HOSA, otherwise known as Health Occupations for Students of America, it is a national organization that focuses on people interested in health professions. It helps students get hands on experiences and go to events where they get to work with people in the physical and mental health fields.
“By having HOSA, especially for those kids that are interested in working in mental health, it would give them an opportunity to look at some of those careers and career pathways,” said adviser Stephanie Wagner.
The advisors hope to gain interest towards the club. They want to explore health care, to help students decide what career they might want to pursue.
“There are many different categories, including leadership, health and mental health categories where students can compete, and I’d like to see at least half of my students compete next year,” said adviser Sheila Lahmann.
Students have taken field trips to multiple different events.
“The field trips have been pretty fun,” said sophomore Manny Valadez Campos. “My favorite one was psychology, and we got to learn about the different parts and a little bit of its history.”
As of now, the main goal for HOSA is to make the club known and expand the advisors, hope to eventually have a group of students compete at state leadership conference. The club meets twice a month for about an hour, on the first and third Wednesday after school in room 227.
