Head wrestling coach Jason Susnjar won the 2024 wrestling Class A coach award.
Nebraska wrestling coaches decided who they thought should be considered for the award, then voted from the list of nominees. Susnjar doesn’t think the award is a big deal. It’s just part of life’s plan, and anyone could’ve received the award.
“We just do what we feel should be done,” Susnjar said. “Whether that’s the off-season workouts, doing this or doing that. The kids did it, I just get all the praise for all their hard work.”
Junior wrestler Kendall Holtmeyer feels Susnjar is a great role model.
Last season “he was really funny, and he reminded me of my own dad,” Holtmeyer said. “When he’s coaching, he’s very stern but also nice. He is very thorough.”
Sophomore wrestler Khy’ree Thomas said that something Susnjar taught him is to never give up. Holtmeyer feels the same.
“He taught me not to give up on myself,” Holtmeyer said. “I used to doubt myself a lot, and he taught me not to.”
Holtmeyer believes the award is a big deal compared to other awards, and she was excited for Susnjar to receive it.
“They [the team] weren’t surprised because obviously he is a great coach, so they were just like, ‘Of course you won that,’” Holtmeyer said.
Susnjar, Holtmeyer and Thomas are hosting their Green and Gold Invite at home Dec 3.
