One minute on the clock is announced and the time starts ticking down. This is when Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) students run in and out of bleachers accumulating any donation the crowd is willing to drop into their paper bag, collecting money to help towards raising awareness and a cure for Muscular Dystrophy.

Since 2012, DECA has been raising money with Miracle Minute to help kids go to a summer camp ran by the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) where they participate in swimming, zip-lining and dancing all while gaining valuable life skills.

Academy sponsor Kimberly Wyllie has been doing Miracle Minute at the school for six years.

DECA’s first Miracle Minute of this school year was held during the second football game of the season against Omaha South High. This Miracle Minute wasn’t like any other. At the end of Miracle Minute students ended with $273. After the event, Wyllie was informed that someone wanted to match the amount they raised that night.

“At first when I found out someone wanted to match the donation it made me glad to see nice people are still in this world helping a cause like MDA ,” senior Kimberly Martinez said.

Special education para, Louis Wolfson, who has worked with students with Muscular Dystrophy, donated $548 dollars to the charity. Recently, a student he worked with who had the disease passed away.

“It was a no-brainer to match the money and help the cause,” Wolfson said.
DECA plans to continue Miracle Minute during this year’s basketball season.

“We had a few successful Miracle Minutes last year during the basketball season,” Wyllie said. “We hope to continue that this year.”DECA students raise money for Muscular Dystrophy, donation gets matched
