Benson combines baseball team with North Vikings

The Omaha North Vikings will soon be sharing the baseball diamond with the Omaha Benson Bunnies if NSAA approves it. The teams came to an agreement to play together earlier this year.

The idea was brought up during a conversation between North’s head coach Eric Janecek and Benson’s assistant coach Dan Kenny.

“Well, I’m excited for it,” Janecek said. “It’s going to help bring numbers into the program. It’s also going to help have kids- have players- play at the appropriate level.”

The Bunnies lacked facilities and both teams only had varsity teams due to a lack of participation in their respective programs.

Because of the lack of players, the Vikings ended their season with four wins and 18 losses last year and the Bunnies had no wins and 15 losses.

“Overall, I think it’s great,” Bears head coach Cody Kottich said. “It’ll be keeping kids who love baseball out and give them an opportunity.”

The teams will share the Vikings baseball facility at Fontenelle Park and play under the name of the Omaha North Vikings. The combination will stay in place for multiple years, in an attempt of grabbing the attention of more student athletes.

“The biggest thing is getting the kids that want to play or intrigued in wanting to play is getting them out and getting them to try,” Janecek said
