Recently, students have noticed that industrial technology teacher Jorge Chavez now has a cart that he pushes around the school. Until now, only administrators had these carts. So how did a teacher like Chavez get one?
“Well, we really were just looking for somebody who was reliable and could support the front,” said principal Anthony Clark Kaczmarek. “Chavez is an ex-Marine. He takes things very seriously. He’s always here, he’s always on time. And we knew he’d be the man to do it.”
Chavez has been stationed at the front doors for the past few weeks, and students notice him every morning—even if they don’t always say anything.
“Bryan High School needs someone to be the face of the school, but they chose to pick Mr. Chavez for that,” said Chavez. “I believe 100 percent that they picked me for a reason, and I can tell you exactly what the reason is. It’s because I’m always there. I am always on time, and I am always taking care of my students.”
Chavez said he doesn’t see it as recognition.
“It’s not a reward,” said Chavez. “The school just needs someone to be there. I greet students every morning. I say ‘Good morning,’ ‘Happy Monday,’ ‘Happy Tuesday,’ whatever… I just try to make sure they feel welcome.”
He thinks it sets the tone for the day. Some students like it, some ignore it, but either way, he keeps doing it.
“I don’t really say anything to him, but it’s cool seeing him in the mornings and not just the other ladies and the principal,” said Richard Romo, freshman.
Other students say hi or dap him up, then keep going about their day.
From now on, Chavez will be at the front of the school helping students start their day right.
“Don’t be late to school, make sure you have your ID card, take a picture… and most importantly, be on time, always, and have fun,” said Chavez.
