Football team balances negatives with positives

With a record of 1-6 the varsity football team has had a rough season to, put it nicely. They have battled a poor mind-set and consistently making mistakes on the field.

“Right now, we’re struggling to score because of offensive mistakes from interceptions, to wrong routes, fumbles, missed blocks… it’s always something small, but big enough to where we can’t score,” head coach Tyler Johnson said.

The team has allowed 17 sacks, 20 total offensive turnovers and 570 penalty yards.

“We got to have a winning mind-set and play together, if we don’t play together we don’t win,” running back junior Jaylon Walker said.

Problems on the defensive side of the ball come from allowing their opponents too many rushing yards. They have allowed over 2,420 rushing yards which have contributed to 38 opponent rushing touchdowns.

“We can’t stop the run; if we get rid of that, then we can win games,” Johnson said.

While the Bears have much to work on, they have had numerous personal triumphs this season.

Senior quarterback Jack Wiebelhaus is currently ranked as the number two quarterback in passing yards in Class A. Also, ranked in Class A is senior wide receiver Antoine Curtis who has 505 receiving yards on the season.

“It makes all the work worth it,” Wiebelhaus said.

And while the team did not win against schools such as Millard West and Grand Island, Johnson and the other coaches were proud of their heart and fight on the field.

“We have a tendency to play up to our good opponents and play down to the teams we should beat,” Johnson said. “We played one of our most complete games against a top three team.”
